Dean College Essay During my year at Dean College, apart from putting efforts in enhancing my academic performance, I had been working as a peer tutor in the Learning Center. The Learning Center provides materials and information to enhance students’ learning skills, ability and their knowledge on the content of subjects. My role is to offer content assistance in the areas of Economics, English and Mathematics, but would often cross-tutor in several other areas such as Criminal Justice, writing, and general study skills. Experiencing the success in assisting other students and receiving good feedbacks had gained me a really joyful work experience as a peer tutor. I had a relatively different idea of being a peer tutor, since students usually went to the learning center for quick review on their essays which were due shortly. I had been working hard in marketing strategies, whereas creating an atmosphere of a place that they can spare their time here to concentrate, a place where combine the characteristics of library and private tutors. In this place, they can concentrate on their studies, with rich resources like computer stations, printers and reference books. Moreover, to make them feel more comfortable, they won’t feel like they are being tagged as doing bad on academics, since tutors no longer wear staff tags. They will feel more confidence on themselves in this way. I think that it is essential to create a certain sort of relationship right off the bat with the person you are tutoring. It is important to make the student feel that we are also students that are continually learning and also willing to contribute out ideas and point of view with them. There is a major difference between a peer tutor and a teacher. I believe that peer tutors do not judge and on top of that, they do not give out grades! It is also easier for tutors to come out and say that they do not know all the answers. Many times, a student can have trouble in class but never address these questions to their teachers for many different reasons. One of them could be because they are afraid of talking in front of a larger group of students. Another reason could be because they might feel that their question is stupid. These reasons could inhibit a student from learning and understanding the material. I think that as a peer tutor, I am able to help these students on a one-on-one basis. I think that my experiece gained from this job is very meaningful and has helped me a lot in the way to communicate with others in a more positive and encouraging way. Helping others makes me feel more satisfied with my performance and has definitely given me a lot more confidence that I can assist others even though I may have shortcomings. These students learn something from me as a peer tutor and on the other hand, I learn a lot of things from the students who have sought for my help.

Daoism: a philosophy of life Essay

Daoism is not a religion, the Philosophical Daoists believe the Dao Jia is a philosophy of life. Taoism is translated into English simply as â€Å"the way or path.† Every Taoist believes the goal in life is to become one with the Tao â€Å"Taoist Beliefs†. Taoism is pronounced (Dow-ism), and it means path or the way. Taoism very vague and has to be experienced, it â€Å"refers to a power which envelops, surrounds and flows through all things, living and non-living. The Tao regulates natural processes and nourishes balance in the universe. To the Philosophical Daoist what is most real is nature. The Daoists believe that nature is constantly changing and as it does so do the patterns and processes. With nature changing constantly there are things or occurrences that can arrive unexpectedly, â€Å"emergent properties.†As for humans they are a natural part of nature, and it is necessary for them to depend upon it, for their living and well being necessities. Living an excellent life according to the Daoists would have to be trying not to conquer the natural world. And trying not to mend it into ways in which it would only help in achieving wealth and riches, but instead to go with the flow of the natural world. Therefore, to live an excellent life, they would do so by flowing with the natural occurrences and processes of the world. The Taoist path to salvation is called Wu Wei, meaning â€Å"the principle of non-action.† The way to attain unity with the Tao involves no effort, ambition, discipline, or education. Since it is the â€Å"principle of non-action,† it is important to understand Wu Wei is not avoiding of action, but of certain types of action, such as: aggressive, controlling, coercive, manipulative or intimidating. Therefore, each person has an equal opportunity to attain balance. It involves surrender to nature: since every person is by definition part of the Tao, there is no need or reason to seek it elsewhere. Furthermore, everyone has direct access to the Tao because the Tao is connected to reality, and everyone is a part of reality. In summary, there is no need to seek answers outside of oneself. Through non-action the answer is revealed through one’s ow n existence. Wu wei can also be expressed in everyday life, it is considered â€Å"going with the flow of things.† For example, trying to reach a certain place but doing so by polluting or disrupting natural order is not Wu Wei, rather by reaching a certain destination by fitting in with the natural order of the environment  and nature. Wu wei is the living a person who in touch with the understanding of Dao. Many may be quick to believe that the Philosophical Daoists are pacifists because they do not disrupt the way of the natural being. But, that would be an inaccurate statement. Fighting and warfare are recognized as occasional necessities, they were something that had to be done, and the Philosophical Daoists had a certain way of approaching it. Daoism is strongly against unnecessary warfare and do not glorify it as certain militaries would. The Dao De Jing believes, â€Å"Military weapons are inauspicious instruments†¦so when you have no choice but to use them†¦do so cooly but without enthusiasm† (Dao De Jing 31). Clearly it is evident that the Daoists are not pacifists, t hey believe violence has to occur, but there is a way to approach it without giving it glorification and excitement. Lastly, Daoism is deeply rooted in the love of nature and its wholeness. Humans are a part of nature and could live peacefully if they followed the way of Daoists.

After all, it’s for the greater good, and for the sake of national security from terrorist threats. It’s not quite that simple. If we are to abandon our rights for the sake of safety in our country we would have little to no privacy. Based on how much the internet, text messages, and other monitorable services are used in daily life. People shouldn’t be so quick to give up their privacy rights in the name of national security. Some people will undeniably argue that giving up a few privacy rights is a small cost for making sure our country is safe from most threats. Although it could potentially change people for the greater good, these people would not truly act as they are. I truly believe there is not one person who acts exactly the same around people as they do alone, and if they are constantly being monitored that would likely change their mindset on how they act. Absolute Moral Rules One may believe that an absolute rule against killing humans is essential because killing is always evil and inhumane. Others believe that there are great exceptions to killing humans, such as self-defense, that need to be taken into account when making an absolute rule about killing humans. If someone tries to kill your family member or tries to kill you, should you stand there and die because you do not want to violate the absolute rule, even if your reason behind breaking the rule brings about more happiness and outweighs the consequences of breaking the rule? In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream Essay Horror is a film genre seeking to draw a negative emotion from the viewer by manipulating the primal fear of human. Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginative content such as time travel, space travel, parallel universes, extraterrestrial life; all were involving with futuristic setting and high technology. Above these points, the film Alien combined the two factors in one movie, and introduced a new kind of science fiction horror, which also made it a classic movie ahead of all the other film that comes afterward. The threat still comes from the unknown, but the environment and method of attack were different. Moreover, all the effect in the film were done before CGI, making the realistic appearing of aliens bursting out of chests and of bloody gory deaths all the more amazing since there is no help of computer. First, the idea of alien as the main plot is quiet unique at that time, since all the unknown thing makes people scared. As we watched the film in class before, such as the killer in the movie Time Machine and Psycho, or the demon that was not suppose to be dug out in The Exorcist. One common thing in these horror films, all the female character is always vulnerable and weak who waits for help or to be killed somehow. However, in Alien, they created the first heroine character- Ripley, who is hard, competent and ruthless in the big screen that showed the spirit of independent female power. The film begins with an obvious hierarchy of male dominants; however, as the films goes and men are killed or fall under the chain of command to woman, another first. The environment was also very distinctive from other horror film; a group of people out of nowhere in the space, lacking of substantial resource to call for help. Its already a dangerous act to put a group of people in a sealed container, since youve known about how humanity works under the temptation of power and desire. If something bad happened no one can hear you scream from space. Ridley Scott surely knew how to create the atmosphere of fear and create the fidgety surprise to the audience. Many scenes in the movie successfully gave me a fright. Dallas unsuccessfully attempts to remove the creature from Kanes face, discovering that its blood is acid. Eventually, the alien detaches on its own and seems dead or not, which is terrified. Afterward, the small alien creature burst out from Kanes chest and quickly escapes and began to haunt them one by one. Its quite similar contrast from the film Psycho, instead of being haunting by the unknown slasher in a creepy old mansion, the crew startling and attacking by the alien creature and fears its dangerous ability and unpredictable hostility. In the end, Ripley fought alone in the spacecraft against the alien, the fear from her eyes and a bit of desperation really expressed the feeling of in space, no one can hear you scream. Always be careful of you ambition, it might cause a catastrophe. A famous quote form Neil Armstrong: Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. Since the great astronaut printed his footstep on moon for the first time, the outer space becomes a whole new paradise to human cover with mysterious color. People are so eager to find out whats out there from earth. In the film, Ash tried to preserve the skin-color squirmy stuff, this showed the character of curiosity and ambition in human instinct somehow always brought a calamity. It seems to be some kind of pattern in both horror film and science fiction film that people always looks for trouble through their ambition.
